STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths

STEM Science Workshop (88)  IMG 9049 STEM Rat Dissection (3)

The ‘National STEM Agenda’ ensures that students are not only excited by Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths but also that they are encouraged and well equipped to pursue a career in STEM areas, should this be of interest to them.   At Invicta Grammar School,  Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths are at the heart of the curriculum and a huge range of STEM opportunities are actively supported and promoted - both in and out of lessons.

As a result of creative teaching and exciting super-curricular activities, we have ever improving results in the STEM fields at GCSE and A Level.  We are also proud that many students are nominated for and have won awards in STEM fields.  These include a Year 12 student winning the Sapphire Award for Problem Solving in the Advanced Physics Olympiad;  Year 8 students winning the Regional Salter’s Chemistry festival ahead of many other grammar schools; Year 13 students reaching the County Finals in the Kent Messenger Bright Sparks Festival and Kent University School Physicists awards for Year 11 and Year 12 students.

STEM opportunities are not confined to lessons and an extensive extra-curricular programme allows students to achieve Bronze and Silver CREST awards; become STEM leaders (as part of a national qualification) and take part in exciting competitions such as  the robotics group who competed in the regional final of the national LEGO competition.

Students’ curiosity of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths is supported through trips to STEM facilities and activity days which are too numerous and frequent to list.   However, the highlights from this year include:

-          The national Big Bang festival at Birmingham NEC.
-          The local Big Bang festival at Discovery Park, Sandwich
-          Chemistry at Work trip, also to Discovery Park, Sandwich.

As a result of the enthusiasm and engagement of our students, we also have a plethora of guest speakers who are keen to share their STEM experiences.  This has allowed for a STEM day for Year 7 and extended learning lectures for students who may in fact be considering higher education or a career in these fields.

Invicta Grammar School also supports the national drive for STEM throughout the year and ran fantastically exciting events for national Science Week and STEM month. These included:

-          Pig Head Dissection.
-          Rat Dissection.
-          Fruity Batteries – light up a bulb with an orange!
-          Create your own lava lamps.
-          Dangerous Demonstrations lunchtime session.
-          Produce a lustrous non-Newtonian fluid – “Make Glitter Slime.”
-          Squishy Circuits – investigating resistance using ‘play-do’ of different  conductivities.

Salters festival 10  Salters festival 14  Stem discovery park 18

During National STEM month, the spirit of competition was in the air with students competing to gain House Points in an effort to win the overall House Cup.  The challenges included:

-          The Straw Boat Challenge – to see which boat could hold the most mass without sinking.
-          The Waste Catapult Challenge – who can use the recycling from the school to fire a drinks can the
           furthest?
-          The Parachute Challenge can you land an egg safely on the floor from two stories up?
-          The Beeswax Cosmetic Challenge – linking to Business and Enterprise, can you follow a method to
produce cosmetics from the beeswax made from the beehive at school?
-          Family Crane Challenge – which family would build the best crane from Connex in one hour?

To summarise, STEM is not something else that we do at Invicta, it is in all aspects of school life which gives our students a brighter start to their careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. It is for this reason, that we have a significant number of students progress to study these areas at a much higher level at University.
