EXCEL

Invicta's   Excel logo artwork    Programme

DJBET电竞菠菜人 www.wenzhousizu.com The DfE and Ofsted define “the most able” in terms of those whose progress significantly exceeds age related expectations.  At Invicta Grammar School, we believe that all our students should therefore be considered as “most able”.

We may also use the term “highly able” to define those who have the capacity to work and perform at the very highest levels.

Our EXCEL programme is designed to:

  • promote the traits that our most able students need to develop to achieve their potential
  • motivate students to embrace curricular and super-curricular opportunities to develop intellectually and academically
  • evaluate and improve super-curricular opportunities outside lessons to help students develop themselves into well rounded young people, ready for further study
  • introduce challenge through breadth (enriching learning through additional material beyond the core curriculum), depth (extending learning by studying and researching at a deeper level into a specific topic) and pace
  • enhance the high ability of all students

An Invicta student EXCEL profile

The EXCEL programme is underpinned by three elements: Love for Learning; Excellence in Literacy and Oracy; and Super-Curricular Opportunities, which we believe are the three areas students should develop in order to become well-rounded and successful individuals.

An EXCEL student will present most or all the following traits, mind-set, skills, knowledge, work ethic and qualities as detailed below.

Love for learning

  • asks questions to deepen their understanding, demonstrating an inquiring mind
  • questions assumptions
  • takes a creative approach to problem solving
  • is keen to attempt ‘challenges’
  • enjoys tackling open-ended tasks
  • demonstrates strong resilience in the face of challenge
  • pursues mastery
  • forms strong opinions and adapts their thinking in response to new information
  • makes links between different topics and subjects
  • possesses a dynamic and organized set of traits as per the Character Compass
  • research and investigate a specific topic for personal interest
  • takes a critical view of ideas and arguments encountered at school or in the media

Excellence in literacy and oracy

  • reads a range of challenging texts for pleasure
  • reads beyond the curriculum in each subject
  • can verbalise and share their learning with others
  • expresses complex ideas and arguments convincingly in speech (including debating, public speaking, LAMDA)

Super-curricular opportunities

A super-curricular activity is one that contributes to the development of any of our desired EXCEL traits outside or beyond what occurs in the classroom.

  • attends Broadening Horizon trips.
  • takes part in subject Masterclasses.
  • takes part in Broadening Horizon lectures.
  • takes part in internal and external competitions, e.g debating, public speaking
  • conducts further research to deepen or widen their understanding
  • completes the project, e.g level 1, 2 or 3.
  • takes part in a super-curricular club or POP.
  • pursues a super-curricular accreditation from a POP or club, e.g achieve the Bronze Arts Award.

We know that it is important to encompass a wide range of methods to identify our highly able students which looks beyond tests results and teachers’ assessment.  Our process is ongoing and our students are at the heart of it by collecting EXCEL rewards which are awarded for:

  • Steps toward Mastery
  • Intellectual Curiosity
  • Problem Solving
  • Academic Rigour and Depth
  • Independent Learning
  • Resilience, Responsibility and Virtuosity

At Invicta, we strive to challenge all our students to achieve high academic standards and develop their skills, knowledge, mind-set and cultural experience.  Each year group has been set a range of challenge which supports their PiXl Edge profile.
